The IC Glossary
Every term below means one specific thing. That precision is not pedantry: most of these ideas have a familiar-sounding neighbour that means something different, and reaching for the neighbour quietly swaps out the whole framework.
So each entry says what the term is, and then says what it is not.
The central shift
Six terms carry the whole idea. Everything else in the framework is machinery underneath them.
- The Instinctual Corealso written the IC, IC, Instinctual Core
The Instinctual Core is a primitive survival system inside every person that misreads modern life as a survival emergency and pushes three commands: destroy the threat, avoid the threat, attain the treat.
It is made of two parts: an inherited instinctual code of roughly four thousand genetic survival directives, and the partition of the subconscious that code uses to interpret the world. It gets first access to everything one experiences, because it runs fast and below awareness.
It is not malicious and it is not defective. It is doing a prehistoric job faultlessly in a world that no longer contains prehistoric threats. A missed message is read as exile from the tribe. A difficult conversation is read as a predator. The response it fires was correct thirty thousand years ago and is wrong today.
The most important property is the one people find hardest to accept at first: it is a separate system, and it can be retrained. It is not the person, and the person is not obliged to obey it.
Not this: Not the ego, not the inner critic, not the reptilian brain, not the amygdala, and not the limbic system. Those are either other people's frameworks or clinical structures. The IC is a survival system described behaviourally, and swapping in any of those terms changes what is being claimed.

- The Human
The Human is the conscious chooser: the one observing the Instinctual Core, deciding what to do about it, and retraining it over time.
The framework needs a name for the part that is not the IC, because the entire method turns on there being two things rather than one. The Human is that name.
This is not a claim about neuroanatomy. It is a working distinction: whatever is doing the observing when one notices a craving is, by definition, not the craving.
Not this: Not a higher self, not a soul, and not a personality type. No spiritual claim is being made, and none is needed for the method to work.
See also Separation, The IC Perspective
- Hijackingalso written hijacked, a hijack
A hijacking is the moment the Instinctual Core takes command of behaviour, so a craving, fear, or reaction feels like one's own decision rather than a signal one received.
It is a complete chain, and seeing the whole chain is what makes it recognisable: a survival requirement is read at the Activation Filter, the IC interprets it, the IC launches its weapons into the brain, and an external reaction follows.
The reason a hijack is so hard to catch from the inside is that it does not announce itself as an intrusion. It arrives wearing the first person. There is no felt seam between the signal and the self, which is why the person experiences the whole thing as simply what they wanted.
Not this: Not a loss of control in the clinical sense, not a panic attack, and not possession by anything. It is a normal system doing its normal job at the wrong moment.

- Separation
Separation is recognising that a thought, emotion, craving, or impulse is coming from the Instinctual Core rather than from oneself.
This is the single move the framework is built to produce. Once a signal is seen as a signal, it stops being an instruction, and there is suddenly someone present to decide what the moment actually calls for.
It also ends a fight that could never be won. Willpower sets one part of the mind against another, which means whoever wins, the person loses. Separation removes the opponent instead of trying to out-muscle it.
Not this: Not detachment, not dissociation, and not mindfulness. Detachment and dissociation put distance between a person and their own experience. Separation does the opposite: it looks directly at the signal in order to identify its source.

- The Default Perspective
The Default Perspective is treating every signal the Instinctual Core sends as one's own identity: that craving is me, that fear is me, that reaction is who I am.
It is the position almost everyone starts from, and it is not a personal failing. Nobody is taught that there is anything else to notice.
It is also where all leverage disappears. If the craving is the self, then resisting it is self-denial and obeying it is self-expression, and there is no third option. Every route out of the pattern is closed by the assumption.
Not this: Not low self-esteem and not a negative mindset. Someone can hold the Default Perspective while feeling excellent about themselves. It is a mistake about where signals come from, not about their emotional tone.

- The IC Perspective
The IC Perspective is recognising that some of what runs through one's head is the Instinctual Core and some of it is oneself, and being able to tell which is which.
It is the Default Perspective corrected. Nothing about the signals changes; what changes is that they now have a return address.
Every piece of leverage the framework offers becomes available at this point, because there is finally a choice being made by somebody.

The tools
Two named procedures and what happens after them. Both are free to use and neither needs an account.
- RADAR
RADAR is the five-step IC Solution tool for catching a hijack while it is happening and separating from it: Recognize, Ask, Dissect, Aha, Reassign.
Recognize means breaking whatever is running in the head down to the raw signal underneath it, rather than to a verdict about oneself. Ask means asking whether this could be coming from the Instinctual Core, a question that already implies a separate source. Dissect means tracing the chain: what the IC read as a threat or a treat, and which command it is running.
Aha is the moment the chain is visible end to end, and a complete chain is a hijacking, so the conclusion arrives on its own: this was never me. Reassign is choosing what to do now that the hijack has been seen.
It is meant to be run often rather than run perfectly. The repetition is the mechanism, because repetition is what teaches the IC anything at all.
Not this: Not a breathing exercise, not a thought-stopping technique, and not a way to suppress a craving. Nothing is being pushed down. The craving is being identified.

- ROAR
ROAR is the four-step IC Solution tool for taking chosen action after separating: Reassess, Organize, Action, Reward.
Reassess means looking at the situation again from the human side, now that the hijack is not driving. Organize means deciding what the chosen response actually is, concretely enough to do it. Action means doing it. Reward means closing the loop deliberately.
The Reward step is the part people skip and the part that does the teaching. It is internal reinforcement rather than a treat: the IC registers that a better way of surviving was found, and becomes marginally more willing to try that route next time.
ROAR is only one of the four things RADAR can hand off to. Not every alarm needs an action on the human side.
Not this: Not goal setting and not a productivity system. The point is not to accomplish more; it is to let a decision be made by the person rather than the alarm.

- Pass-Through
A Pass-Through is when the Instinctual Core fires its signal and the signal simply passes without commanding any behaviour.
This is the success state of RADAR, and it looks like nothing happening, which is why it is easy to miss when it works.
It is the right response whenever there is no real survival requirement underneath the alarm. Quitting smoking is the clean example: nothing about the body actually requires the cigarette, so the entire task is to let a false alarm arrive and leave.
Not this: Not white-knuckling and not resisting. Resistance means fighting the signal, which keeps it central. A Pass-Through means recognising it as a false alarm, at which point there is nothing left to fight.

- The Four Reassign Options
After RADAR reaches Aha, Reassign picks one of four responses: act on the human side with ROAR, let the alarm pass through, replace the behaviour with a better way of meeting a real need, or move the load into external storage.
The right branch depends on whether a genuine survival requirement sits underneath the alarm. Pass-Through applies when there is none. Replacement applies when the need is real and the human chooses a healthier way to meet it, as with food, which one does actually have to eat.
External Storage applies when so much is firing at once that nothing can be organised inside one's head. Offloading it to a list, ideally a digital one, stops the IC from treating the overwhelm itself as an emergency.
ROAR applies when the situation genuinely calls for the human to do something.

- Retraining
Retraining is the process of teaching the Instinctual Core a better way to survive through repetition, rather than trying to overpower it.
Every completed repetition is a data point the IC can use. It is a crude learner, so it needs many of them, and it does not respond to argument at all.
This is the reason the framework asks for practice rather than resolve. Resolve is a single act of force with nothing behind it; retraining is an accumulation.
Not this: Not willpower. Willpower is a conscious-brain function applied against the IC in the moment. Retraining changes what the IC does next time.
See also ROAR, The Great Life Flip
- The Great Life Flip
The Great Life Flip is the move from a life forced by the Instinctual Core to a life chosen by the person, produced by repeated RADAR and ROAR practice.
It is described as a flip rather than a climb because the change is one of position rather than degree. The same signals keep arriving; they stop being the ones in charge.

The machinery
How a hijack is actually assembled. These terms are what make a specific pattern explainable rather than merely nameable.
- The Activation Filter
The Activation Filter is the point where every event, thought, goal, sensation, and obstacle is screened by the Instinctual Core for survival meaning before conscious thought is involved.
The IC gets first access because it runs on the fast, subconscious system. By the time something reaches awareness, it has already been assigned a survival reading.
This is why a reaction can feel like it arrived fully formed and unbidden. It did. The interpretation happened upstream of the person.

- The IC Weapons
The IC Weapons are the nine raw signals the Instinctual Core fires into the brain to force a reaction: fear, anger, hate, sadness, pleasure, stress, cravings, demands, and judgments.
They are called weapons because they are instruments of compulsion rather than information. Each is designed to make a particular response feel like the only available one.
Naming which weapon is firing is the first step of RADAR, and it is deliberately a short list. Nine options are recognisable in the moment; a subtle emotional vocabulary is not.
Not this: Not emotions in the ordinary sense, and not things to be ashamed of having. A weapon firing is a system working, not a person failing.
- The Three External Reactions
Everything the Instinctual Core pushes for reduces to three commands: destroy the threat, avoid the threat, attain the treat.
The list is short because the original problem was short. A prehistoric system needed a fight, a flight, and a reach, and it has not been given anything else since.
Almost any modern pattern can be sorted into one of the three, and doing so is usually the moment it stops looking like a character trait and starts looking like a mechanism.

- The Six Survival Layers
The Instinctual Core reads threats and treats across six layers: Physiological, Safety, Belonging, Pecking Order, Manageability, and IC Evaluation.
Physiological is bodily comfort, rest, and relief, and everything else rests on it. Safety is certainty and protection. Belonging is connection, which the IC treats as life or death because it once was. Pecking Order is rank and respect, so a small slight can raise a full alarm.
Manageability is control and predictability, which is why overwhelm alone can trigger a survival response with no danger present. IC Evaluation is the IC turning its survival logic on the person themselves, and it is where shame and not-good-enough live.
Knowing which layer is aching is usually what explains why a behaviour that makes no sense keeps happening anyway.

- Reward Confusion
Reward Confusion is a cross-layer false victory: the Instinctual Core quiets pain on one survival layer using a reward that belongs to a different layer, then mistakes the relief for a resolution.
Drinking to silence a Safety-layer fear is the classic case. Alcohol pays out Physiological pleasure, the alarm goes quiet, and nothing about the fear has been addressed. The IC records a win and files the method for reuse.
This is the engine of cross-layer addiction, and it explains why a habit can be both entirely ineffective and extremely durable.
Not this: Not any pleasant relief. The mechanism specifically requires the reward and the pain to sit on DIFFERENT layers. When they sit on the same layer, the pattern is an Insatiable Same-Layer Reward instead, and calling that reward confusion misdescribes it.
See also Insatiable Same-Layer Reward, The Six Survival Layers
- Insatiable Same-Layer Reward
An Insatiable Same-Layer Reward is when the Instinctual Core gets exactly the reward it was chasing, on the very layer that was aching, and the win still fails to hold.
Chasing approval is the clear case. The approval is a real Belonging and Pecking Order win on the layers that were sounding the alarm. It satisfies for minutes, the bar resets, and the IC reaches for the lever again.
It is a distinct mechanism from Reward Confusion, and the distinction matters when working out why a specific pattern will not resolve.
See also Reward Confusion, The Six Survival Layers
- Sadness
In this framework Sadness has one exact function: it is the Instinctual Core's punishment for failure, where failure means failing at one of its three external reactions.
Fail to destroy the threat, fail to avoid the threat, or fail to attain the treat, and sadness fires to burn the lesson in. Those are the only three failures the IC recognises, and thirty thousand years ago each of them really could end a life.
It is a survival lesson delivered as punishment. Today, failing does not lead to death, and failure after failure is the only route to anything nobody has done before. The IC punishes exactly what is worth celebrating, and that gap is usually the most useful thing to notice when sadness is firing.
Not this: Not a shutdown or conserve-energy signal, which is a common description and the wrong one. Also not grief. Grief is human and complex; this is the IC's raw failure-punishment signal.

- The Overriding Decision
The Overriding Decision is the one thing a person most wants to change, chosen deliberately so that practice has a target.
It exists because the framework is a practice rather than a realisation, and a practice needs something specific to be practised on.

The practice
What the framework looks like as something a person actually does.
- The IC Solution
The IC Solution is the educational self-help framework built around separating from the Instinctual Core: see the system, separate from it, and retrain it.
It is taught through written investigations, live group meetups, an interactive tool, and video material, all of which use the same vocabulary defined on this page.
Not this: Not therapy, not diagnosis, and not medical treatment. It is educational self-help and peer support, and it does not replace clinical care. Anyone in crisis, in withdrawal, or at risk of harm should seek medical help first.
See also RADAR, ROAR, IC Investigation Meetup
- IC Investigation Meetup
An IC Investigation Meetup is a free live online group session where people investigate a hijack together using the IC Solution.
Someone brings a real pattern from their week and the group traces what the Instinctual Core was doing underneath it. There is no fixed script and no homework.
Attending without speaking is normal and expected. Many people spend their first several sessions listening, which is enough to see the mechanism at work in somebody else.
Not this: Not group therapy and not a twelve-step meeting. It is an educational peer group, and nobody present is acting as a clinician.

Terms this framework does not use
These are the substitutions that come up most often. Each one is a real idea from somewhere else, and each one changes the claim being made.
| Not used | Used instead | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The reptilian brain | The Instinctual Core | A popular-science label for brain anatomy, and a contested one. The IC is defined by what it does, not by where it sits. |
| The amygdala | The Instinctual Core | A specific clinical structure. Using it as a synonym makes a neuroanatomical claim this framework does not make. |
| The ego | The Instinctual Core | Belongs to a different framework with different mechanics and a different account of what to do about it. |
| The inner critic | The Instinctual Core | Names one voice. The IC produces cravings and pleasure as readily as criticism. |
| The addiction brain | The Instinctual Core | Implies the system is peculiar to addiction. It is running in everyone, all the time. |
| Detachment, dissociation | Separation | Those put distance between a person and their experience. Separation looks straight at the signal to identify its source. |
| Mindfulness | Separation | Mindfulness observes without judgement. Separation makes a specific determination: this signal is the IC, not me. |
| Broken, damaged, an addict, a victim | Describe the mechanism instead | The framework's core claim is that the person is not the problem. Language that says otherwise contradicts the method it is describing. |
Where to go from a definition
A definition is the smallest useful piece of this. The framework is a practice, and it is free.
Instinct Center is educational self-help and peer support. It is not therapy, diagnosis, or medical treatment, and it does not replace clinical care. Anyone in crisis, in withdrawal, or at risk of harm should seek medical help first.
