What Is a Hijacking?

When the IC makes the move before the rational mind gets a vote.

What It Is

A hijacking is what happens when the IC completes its full survival sequence — and the result is behavior the rational mind didn't choose.

The chain runs like this: something enters through the Activation Filter, the IC reads it as a survival threat or opportunity, the survival layer activates, and the IC launches its weapons — anger, avoidance, craving, panic, shutdown, people-pleasing. The brain executes. The behavior happens.

All of that fires below the level of conscious awareness. By the time the thinking mind catches up, the damage is often already done: the sharp word was spoken, the binge started, the shutdown began, the scroll session is an hour deep.

A hijacking is not a choice. It is an ancient survival program running in a world it was never built for.

How It Works

The Instinctual Core does not ask permission. Its entire design is speed — survival systems that pause to deliberate don't keep organisms alive. So when the IC detects what it reads as a threat to safety, belonging, status, or physical need, it skips the rational mind and goes straight to action.

This is why a person can "know better" and still do the thing. They can know that snapping at a loved one will make things worse, and still snap. They can know the binge won't help, and still binge. They can know hiding will cost them the opportunity, and still hide. The IC already made the call. The rational mind was watching from the stands.

What makes a hijacking hard to see in real time is that it doesn't announce itself as foreign. In the Default Perspective — where most people spend most of their lives — the IC's signal feels indistinguishable from personal identity. "I am angry." "I need this." "I cannot do this right now." There is no space between the person and the signal. No observer. No leverage.

Why It Matters

Once a person understands the hijacking as a mechanism — not a moral failing — everything changes about how to approach it.

Shame doesn't work on a hijacking because shame is aimed at the wrong target. Willpower doesn't hold because willpower is a rational-mind tool being sent into a fight that's already over. The hijacking happened upstream, before any of those tools were available.

What does work is catching it earlier. RADAR is built specifically for this: a five-step process for recognizing the IC's signature in real time, creating Separation between the person and the signal, and choosing a different response. The key word is earlier — RADAR works best before the hijacking has fully completed, but even after the fact it starts training the pattern recognition that makes earlier catches possible.

The goal isn't to never get hijacked. The goal is to recognize the pattern faster each time it runs.

Hijackings are not character flaws. They are not evidence of weakness, brokenness, or bad values. They are evidence that the IC is doing exactly what it was designed to do — protect — in a world where most of its threat signals are false alarms.

Understanding that distinction is the first real lever for change.

How It Connects

A hijacking is the full expression of the Instinctual Core sequence. It can only be interrupted through Separation — the recognition that the IC's signal is not personal identity. RADAR is the practical tool for building that separation in real time. Once separated, Pass-Through allows the signal to arrive and fade without commanding behavior. The Default Perspective is what makes hijackings invisible; the IC Perspective is what makes them catchable.
